Big No-nos For People with Dry Skin

Find out the things you have to avoid doing if you have dry skin.

We all wish we had perfect skin, but we all know that is never the case for most of us. Some have oilier than usual skin, while others tend to have dry skin, which often feels tight and flaky most of the time. If you belong to the latter category, there are things you need to stop doing if you don’t want your dry skin to get any worse. We call these things the “big no-nos list” for people with dry skin.

The big no-nos list for people with dry skin

Not moisturizing regularly

If moisturizing is a must for people of all skin types, how much more do you think would you need to do it unfailingly if you have dry skin? Never miss a chance to moisturize because it’s one skincare routine that’s keeping your dry skin from getting worse.

We recommend that you use a light moisturizer in the morning before applying makeup. Later, you can follow up with a rich one after washing your face in the evening.

Drying your face before moisturizing

Do you pat your skin dry with a towel right after coming out of the shower, then moisturize afterward? If you do, then you’re doing it all wrong. If you have dry skin, the more you need to keep hydration locked in, which is the job of a moisturizer. Drying off immediately means there would be less moisture to lock in, which won’t be doing your dry skin any favors. So please remember to not dry your face excessively before moisturizing it, even if that feels a bit awkward.

Not drinking enough water

The old and familiar problem – many people, especially ones who spend most of their time indoors, simply forget to drink. Insufficient hydration can lead for various health problems, long term. Aside from these it simply worsens dry skin’s condition pretty fast.

Using toners with high alcohol content

Using toners is a good way of balancing out the PH of your skin. However, the alcohol content of some toners is so high that using them leaves your skin drier than before. So if you’re going to use toners, choose one that that has little to no alcohol content. If possible, use a toner made up of ingredients that are great for hydrating and soothing the skin.

Overdoing the exfoliation

Exfoliation is good since it removes dead skin cells and makes your skin look more radiant and youthful. However, if you have dry skin, don’t overdo it because it will just lead to irritation. Exfoliating once a week should be enough.

Taking long, hot showers

Taking a long, hot shower is one of the most welcome things you can do during the winter. However, if your dry skin could speak, it will probably be railing against it because water that’s too warm can dry it out further by stripping it of its natural oils.

Then again, since hot showers are vital to preserving your sanity during the colder months of the year, the best thing you can do is cut back on their duration. Keep your hot showers to 10 minutes or less.

Using facial cleansers that are too soapy or foamy

Like hot water, soapy or foamy facial cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils and leave your skin all dried out. The best skin cleansers for people with dry skin are oil-based ones, although a cream-based facial cleanser would also be good for dry skin.

Staying too long in climate-controlled rooms

Air-conditioned or heated rooms are a refuge whenever the temperature rises or falls to extremes. The thing is, such environments tend to be dry ones. By spending too much time inside them you could worsen your already dry skin. If you’re going to stay for extended periods inside climate-controlled rooms, have a humidifier running to resolve any moisture issue.

There is no instant solution for dry skin

Still, you can at least keep it from getting worse by following the above tips!

There are advanced methods for those who take this matter seriously. If it’s important for you to preserve young appearance of your skin, you can ask your dermatologist or beautician about laser treatments such as the ClearLift as well as other modern anti aging methods. These involve trans-epidermal delivery, micro-needling, skin resurfacing and more.
